1) Conservation of natural resources
2) Enhance air quality and protect ecosystems
3) Energy sustainability
4) Increase property value
5) Improve quality of life
6) Improvement of pulmonary and cardiac health
7) Reduce waste

Many old homes may need repairs or renovations, especially in locations that are susceptible to natural disasters. Home remodeling can transform your home into an appealing and attractive property. It is also a time when additional responsibilities may arise. It is important to take note of the consequences of older building materials whose qualities not only harm the environment, but can create health concerns.

Asbestos

Asbestos is the name given for a group of fibrous minerals that were mined for their qualities as fire resistant, insulation and high durability. Asbestos made its name because of its resistance to fire and heat properties. Homes built before 1980 may still contain asbestos, a fibrous mineral used through the majority of the 20th century.

Asbestos exposure is easily prevented by taking simple precautions. In most situations, asbestos appears in roof shingles, dry wall, attic insulation, popcorn ceilings, joint compounds and electrical wires. Many green Eco-friendly applications are available which not only provide safe options, but can even reduce annual energy costs!

Healthy Tips & Info

If any asbestos is located or suspected in your home, the best advice is to leave it un-disturbed.
Asbestos that is left un-touched and is in good condition almost always will not be cause for alarm. When it becomes damaged and its fibers become airborne, this is where significant worries arise.

Exposure to asbestos can lead to the development of related illnesses such as mesothelioma and asbestosis. Diagnosis of this asbestos-related lung illness is a difficult task due to a long latency period and many mesothelioma symptoms mimicking less serious ailments.

If you are unsure as to whether asbestos is in your home, you should find a certified inspector to determine if any harmful materials are present. The Environmental Protection Agency provides assistance and information on asbestos abatement and the regulations involved. If the inspector determines that a removal is needed, they must be performed by a licensed abatement contractor who is trained in handling dangerous substances. This process requires professional care and protective equipment. Once the process is complete, replacement options should be considered.

Green Remodeling in the Home

Conducting a study in 2003, the United States Green Building Council also reported a savings of $50 to $65 for green constructed buildings. Rather than expensive and mal-treated wood, interior walls can be made from steel and concrete, avoiding many of the problems associated with asbestos and other insulation methods.

Living in the 21st century, environmental sustainability has become a growing aspect when purchasing or performing home renovations on a private residence. The implementation of Eco-construction, green energy solutions will play an important role in the transformation to a healthier and sustainable world.

Many home re modelers have understood this important aspect of our lives and can greatly assist clients in achieving a green home. Green construction brings together many techniques which aim to reduce or eliminate the impacts in which physical structures have on the environment.

Some Eco-friendly alternatives to asbestos insulation include: cellulose, which is becoming a popular new green insulation material. It is chemically treated to reduce levels of mold. Cotton fiber is made from recycled batted material and is then treated to be fireproof. A water based spray polyurethane foam, lcynene features no toxic components. The implementation of these Eco-friendly products can reduce annual energy costs in the household by 25 percent annually.

  1. Thanks for posting these great tips on building & remodeling green. Eventually, being environmentally sensitive won’t be such a niche topic. One important way to limit your environmental impact during remodeling is to minimize the amount of demolition waste you create, as well as the amount of waste from poor planning of your new materials. Rather than replacement, wood cabinets in the kitchen and vanities in the bathrooms can be cleaned up with lemon oil, or sanded and restained or painted, with only non-toxic materials, then adorned with new hardware to give them a fresh look. Also, when using wood for framing or cabinetry, choose wood that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, which means it comes from a well managed forest. I have a lot more on this (including green tips from a prominent player in the green construction space) on my blog and e-book.

  3. As a contractor, this article is something that I am faced with all the time.

Many of my clients are looking to remodel their homes through Going Green. It is something that is becoming more and more common as time goes on.

Also, asbestos is something that I still have to face when remodeling older homes. You have to be careful with that stuff. If you are a homeowner, and believe your house is built with materials containing asbestos you should contact a contractor or specialist who can help find the areas of your home that may be infected.
