Home Construction Improvement - Interview with Todd Fratzel

We have the pleasure of introducing Todd Fratzel, renowned home improvement blogger.

Tell us about yourself.

Todd Fratzel My name is Todd Fratzel. I’m a Registered Professional Engineer in three States. My primary occupation is the Principal Engineer for a Design-Build Construction and Development Company.

I have over 15 years of Engineering and Construction background involving residential and commercial buildings. In addition to my primary occupation I also own Front Steps Media which publishes Home Construction Improvement and Today’s Green Construction.

Why did you start the blog?

I started the blog as a hobby to share my experiences in construction, engineering and renovating homes. I’ve personally completely renovated a home from the 50’s and recently built a new home. The combination of experiences seemed like a great subject to blog about.

What are the most common types of questions from your readers?

Questions on my sites vary quite a bit but lately they all seem to revolve around projects having to do with energy conservation. Lots of people are trying to save money by saving energy. Furthermore they are trying to do energy conservation projects themselves (DIY) in order to make their dollars go as far as possible.

You also started a green remodeling blog. Does your green remodeling blog have a DIY focus as well?

I started the Green Construction blog in order to share my experiences with the every expanding Green Movement. I’m not sure that the site truly focuses on just DIY Green Construction because many Green Construction techniques are best left to professionals. This is especially true because the equipment and technology are typically quite advanced. I do however think the site is written for the DIYer that wants to learn about Green Construction to be a better informed consumer.

What are the benefits of green remodeling vs. regular remodeling?

To me the benefits are quite obvious. Green remodeling and construction offers the home owners the potential for a cleaner living environment (cleaner air), reduced environmental impacts, and hopefully long term savings in energy consumption.

How do you get ideas for your articles?

90% of my ideas come from my experiences in the construction industry. Every day I’m exposed to every facet of residential and commercial construction. I’m also exposed to a tremendous amount of industry representatives that keep us informed of the latest trends in materials, equipment and building practices.

What is your favorite home improvement tip?

Without a doubt; research, plan, take your time and finish what you started.
