10 Houses to See Before You Die

Life’s too short to let the biggest and best pass you by. Some houses stand out from the rest in design, fame, and down right insanity.
Here are 10 unmissable digs that are a must-add to any Bucket List.
1. A Bit of Magic in the Mist

Alnwick Castle in the United Kingdom has become a tourist magnet despite being a private family home. The ancestral owners of the “real” Hogwarts School, the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, are generous in opening their home to fans and visitors throughout the year who want to see the famous castle used for the exterior shots of Harry’s magical school. 2. Don’t Fence Me In

A New York artist visited this secluded Yelapa, Mexico beachfront and couldn’t imagine anything ever coming between her and the tropical views. So, she built a house without walls. There are small breaker structures to keep out floods during the wet season, but the rest is a tree house truly at one with its environment. (Credit waywuwei)
3. A Dark Tower in the Woods

Sharpen your sword and file down your staff, this is the purported home of Vlad, the infamous impaler. Prince Vlad was also known to reside in the, now ruined, Poenari fortress, but Romanians have embraced Bran Castle as the true inspirational home of Dracula culture around the world. 4. There’s Life Underground

The opal miners of Coober Pedy, South Australia are nobody’s fools. With searing heat and unbearable sun in this arid desert town, digging deep was the only way to go. The dugout structures of Coober Pedy include fully functional homes, a Catholic church, a motel, and even a local pub gone six feet under. (Credits Nachoman-au, kleinmatt66, Hopkinsii)
5. Everything’s Bigger Down Here

Proudly boasting the title of America’s Largest Home, the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina, one of many stunning Vanderbilt Family estates, is a must-see for the sheer over-the-top opulence of the Guilded Age. (Credit Exothermic)
6. Baby, Let’s Play House

Not just a title of one of his songs, Elvis played house in Graceland for his entire career. Some houses are famous for how they’re built, but Graceland is a modest Memphis manor that’s far more famous for what’s inside. From the trophies to the jumpsuits, the Jungle Room to the peacock lounge, hundreds of thousands of Elvis fans make their pilgrimage to Graceland, every year. (Credits Pictophile, SD Rebel)
7. The House That Rises Above

Contrasting the gradual rebirth of post-war Vietnam, Hang Nga constructed the beginings of her ongoing acid-trip masterpiece, the Crazy House of Dalat. A mix of tree house, pop culture, and pure fantasy, her personal home and triumph reaches five stories and shows few signs of stopping. (Credits hopemeng, A of Doom)
8. The House That Frank Built

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallwater House in Pennsylvania is a testament to innovation. Wright was a prioneer of modern architecture in an era far more facinated with ornamentation echoing British styles. Wright’s Fallwater stands as a bold statement for unique, genuine American design and has influenced the industry ever since. (Credit happy via)
9. Spin Me Right Round, Baby, Right Round

Sarah Winchester was a superstitious woman who believed the fortuneteller’s claims that she would die on the day she stopped construction on her home in San Jose, California. Sarah did all she could to fend off the Grim Reaper, comissioning doors to nowhere, stairs to flat ceilings, windows in the floor, and all manner of other unimaginable oddities. Thus, the Winchester Mystery House was born. (Credits National Park Service, Tammy Green, Thomas Roche, Winchester Mystery House)
10. Where the Moisture Vaporators Are

Luke may have felt that Uncle Owen’s moisture farm was a dead end, but it’s a must-see for any Star Wars fans finding themselves in Matmata, Tunisia. Much of Tatooine was set, and filmed, in the historic troglodyte home structures. It is now operated as a chintzy hotel with the lively pub located in Luke’s own bedroom. I had no idea the Tatooine segment of Star wars was filmed in Tunisia. That’s a pretty neat style of architecture.
my thoughts exactly….about Tatooine
Nice post but the most houses are a bit to ‘noisy’ to me
i love The House That Frank Built … wow that’s awesome..

Another beautiful building is La familia in Barcelona
Wow! Really amazing compilation of beautiful houses
I have been in the underground house and church in Coober Pedy - very cool. The town is in the outback and very much a frontier. The landscape is akin to the moon
“Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallwater House in Pennsylvania is a testiment to innovation. ”
Testiment is not spelled like “testicular”
It is spelled “testament”
