Questions and answers
- What do you wish customers knew about your profession or trade?
Most people believe that a DJ just shows up and plays music. Because of this, many people believe we are overpaid for little work. However, the majority of our work is done prior to an event along with the time and money we spend in investing in our equipment, setting it up, and practicing our DJ abilities. I can't speak for other DJs, but for every event I do, I put in between thirty to forty hours of work with client meetings, preparing documents, going over details with everyone involved including other vendors, and creating and finalizing a playlist prior to an event.
- What certifications or professional affiliations do you have?
We have received the 2012 Bride's Choice Award from Wedding Wire, are listed on Momentville's Hot List as an outstanding vendor, are members of the School Dance Network and Certified Responsible DJs, and are Community Sponsors of KVAL Communities.
- What brands or products do you work with?
We have worked with Applebee's, Microsoft, AT&T, U-Haul, University of Oregon, Oregon Innovation Center, Hilton, Red Lion Hotels, and more.
- What questions should a customer ask before hiring a professional in your trade?
Always ask a DJ if they have plenty experience for your type of event--a club DJ may not be the right choice for a wedding, and a sock hop DJ may not be the best choice for a high school prom. Ask for references, testimonials, and if there are any pictures or videos from past events that you can view.
- What types of jobs are the most common?
For us, our most common events are weddings, middle school dances, and high school proms and homecoming dances.
- Tell us something customers may not know about you.
Most people who know me on a personal level will know this, but I am a huge computer geek and a gamer, love listening to and watching podcasts, and am a big Netflix junkie. I also like dressing up for events.
- What are the most frequent questions you get from customers? What are the answers?
Our most frequent question is price, which we always answer with the fact that price depends on what type of event they are having. A backyard BBQ will require less time to prepare than a wedding, and as such, our pricing will reflect that. We've recently been getting asked how we get our music, which is a very good question that should be asked to every DJ in order to make sure their music library is legal.
Our music is received through PrimeCuts, a record pool provided by TM Studios, which includes all of the Top songs in every chart each week along with Latin music every other week. Other than that, we do the occasional iTunes or Amazon MP3 download as necessary.
- What services do you provide your customers after the work has finished?
We always follow up with every event we perform to make sure our clients are satisfied with our performances and the turn out of their event. We also try to remember to send our wishes on their anniversaries when it comes to weddings.
- Tell us about the project or job that you are most proud of (in the last 12 months).
Honestly, there are too many projects to name that we are proud of. Every wedding we do is an honor as we get to be part of creating memories for each couple and their families.
- What would you recommend customers looking to save money?
Book your date as far in advance as possible; generally, we give out some discounts for early bookings and at Bridal Shows. Prioritize your budget so that your entertainment will be a priority. Remember, while entertainment is only 5 to 10 percent of your budget, on average, it will be responsible for 80 percent of your event's success and is the one thing your guests remember most from your event.
- How did you get started?
DJ Stoltz Records was started in 2004 by David Stoltz while he was attending high school in Bend, OR. Being involved with the music program and helping out with school events is what gave David the passion to turn his hobby into a career.
- What areas of your trade do you specialize in?
As a husband and wife team we are primarily wedding specialists with weddings being over 80% of our business. We know what it takes to pull off a successfull wedding including all of the planning, preparation, coordinating and day of facilitation that is required.
- How many projects do you average in a year?
We average around thirty to forty weddings a year and fifteen school dances.
- What information do you recommend to have readily available before looking for a professional in your trade?
A few things you must know before contacting a DJ for your event are your event date, time, location, and the type of event it will be. Any other information about your event will help us in knowing what available packages and services are best suited for your event based on your budget.
