Questions and answers

  • What would you recommend customers looking to save money?
  • It depends on the project. Usually the savings come in with the little things uch as light fixtures, style of trim used, door knob styles, etc.

  • What types of jobs are the most common?
  • Decks, bathrooms and custom trim work.

  • What brands or products do you work with?
  • In regards to decks, all wood used is premium pressure treated unless the customer wants the composite. In this instance, I use Timbertec decking.

  • What questions should a customer ask before hiring a professional in your trade?
  • Anything that comes to mind. Cost, length of project to be performed, license and insurance. Asking for references and pictures I feel is always a must.

  • What do you wish customers knew about your profession or trade?
  • Really just the basics. If you know the basics, you are likely to understand better what the project entails.

  • What services do you provide your customers after the work has finished?
  • Follow up phone calls, making special trips to make sure the customer is happy. If there is ever any manufacturer's warranty issues, I take all appropriate steps to make sure work gets done and customer is happy.

  • What information do you recommend to have readily available before looking for a professional in your trade?
  • Ideas of what the project you want. How you want it to look when completed. The budget you have to work with.

  • How many projects do you average in a year?
  • With the economy it is hard to say. This past year the projects I had the privilege of performing were in the 1 week to 2 week range to complete.

  • What areas of your trade do you specialize in?
  • All carpentry needs, however we specialize in decks and custom trim work.

  • How did you get started?
  • I started in the carpentry field at the age of 19 by working with a friend. I worked for many reputable contractors for 15 yrs and decided to go on my own at the age of 34.

  • What are the most frequent questions you get from customers? What are the answers?
  • Of course there is the money question. I do not give verbal estimates. All estimates go out thru the mail 1-2 days after meeting with the customer. The estimate is detailed in writing with all aspects of work to be performed. Timeline on when to start and of course how long to do. Decks are usually 2 days but a bathroom can take up to 10 days. It all depends on the project.

  • Tell us about the project or job that you are most proud of (in the last 12 months).
  • I am most proud of the deck I built for my home. This was a project everyone said that would not look appropriate for my residence. After the deck was completed, those same people cannot get over how the deck turned out.
