- What questions should a customer ask before hiring a professional in your trade?
What is the scope of work that you are proposing?
What are the specifications you are using?
Which selections are you recommending?
Have you done this work before?
May I see a list of references and call them?
May I see your certificate of insurance?
May I see our contractor's license?
Is the contractor's proposal clear, specific and understandable?
- How many projects do you average in a year?
We average 200 large and small projects each year.
- What do you wish customers knew about your profession or trade?
A professional contractor should be as well educated about his profession as any white collar professional. If the contractor you're interviewing doesn't impress you as such, the project could reflect his respect for his trade.
- What are the most frequent questions you get from customers? What are the answers?
How much will it cost? How long will it take? When can the work be started?
It all depends on the answers to these 3 questions:
1. The scope of the work (what are we doing?)
2. The specifications of the project (how are we doing it?)
3. The selections for the project (what products are we using?)
- What brands or products do you work with?
Kohler, Wellborn Cabinets, Pella Windows & Doors, Simonton Windows, Certainteed Shingles & Siding, Owens Corning Shingles, Norandex Siding, Azec, GAF Shingles, Buckingham Slate, Pro Via doors.
- What would you recommend customers looking to save money?
Three things drive cost:
1. The scope of the work (what are we doing?)
2. The specifications of the project (how are we doing it?)
3. The selections for the project (what products are we using?)
Work with your contractor to value engineer your project by adjusting these 3 variables.
- Tell us about the project or job that you are most proud of (in the last 12 months).
We recently restored the roof of a 1905 Victorian that had been hit by a tornado! We installed a new Buckingham Slate roof, inline copper gutters and three copper roofs.
- What services do you provide your customers after the work has finished?
We provide ongoing warranty service for any of our installed work and are happy to provide references for local business services that any homeowner may need. We tend to become the local "Angie's List" to our clients.
- What areas of your trade do you specialize in?
We work on all aspects of home improvement:
- Roofs
- Windows
- Siding
- Carpentry
- Kitchens
- Baths
- Additions
- What information do you recommend to have readily available before looking for a professional in your trade?
History of the home and work done on it over the years is the most important. If exterior additions are desired, the platte for the home is important.
- How did you get started?
Jim Hicks Home Improvement is the realization of a longtime dream for Jim Hicks, who has been serving the homeowners in Hampton Roads from Virginia Beach to Williamsburg with construction services since 1998. The company finally gives Jim the ability to have control over the quality that he expects from any project that would carry his personal name.
- What types of jobs are the most common?
Bathroom remodels, roof replacements, carpentry, kitchen remodels, room additions, siding replacement and window replacement.
