Questions and answers
- What questions should a customer ask before hiring a professional in your trade?
#1 Do they carry Liability Insurance coverage?
Do they have commercial equipment?
See if the owner, employees are presentable. Because that reflects into the business. What does their equipment look like? Does it look clean and maintained.. Or does it look like a mess?
Does he have references available? Or customers whom you may give a call to ?
- What information do you recommend to have readily available before looking for a professional in your trade?
Know what it is you are wanting. And what you are going to be expecting. Any specific requests or needs you will wanting done. Are you wanting weekly maintenance? Or a bi-weekly service. Some companies do not provided bi-weekly service. See if you can find a recommendation. From a friend or co-worker. If you go by a online ad. Please refer to question you should ask.
- What do you wish customers knew about your profession or trade?
That not all people out there. Mowing lawns are the same.
The costs of running a business. Paying for general liability insurance. Dealing with ever fluctuating gas prices. Equipment Costs. Initial purchase prices of equipment. Mowers run 8 to 15 thousand dollars. Costs of push mower, trimmers, edgers, blowers. Costs of having a truck and trailer to haul that equipment. Gas,Insurance, maintenance and repair.. It breaks you fix it or buy a new one. Then add in employee cost. If the guy has one or two.. Don't forget uncle sam.. He will take 25%
- What services do you provide your customers after the work has finished?
For me it is about honesty and integrity. That if for some reason the customer may not be happy. The thing to do is make it right. No matter how much time has passed.
- How did you get started?
I first got started. After i got out the United States Marine Corps. It was hard to find a job then. So i went to what i did when i was in high school. Plus i have always enjoyed working outside. Never been a cubical type.
- What types of jobs are the most common?
Lawn Maintenance.. During Lawn mowing season..
Window cleaning service.. Before or after lawn season..
It does get busy around holiday season :) Getting the windows clean before company comes over.
- What brands or products do you work with?
I prefer to use a scag zero turn mower. For one.. It is top of the line industry wise. Prefer to use echo trimmers and blowers.. Shindawa edger.. Prefer to use sthil for chain saw
- What would you recommend customers looking to save money?
Avoid mowing your lawn at the low blade settings. Low-mowed lawns cost more money. Because they require more water, more herbicide to control the weeds. And require mowing more often to keep it that short. Bi-weekly service is a option. Set your mower blades higher. The lawn is thicker. And has the natural ability of blocking water evaporation from the soil below. Weeds do not grow as well in a higher lawn. A length of between 2.5 and 3.5 inches during the summer. Leave your grass clippings on the lawn. As they return nitrogen into the soil. For better lawn health.
- Tell us something customers may not know about you.
That i have driven across the united States. Many times in my growing up years. Drove from Idaho to Florida every year. That i have been in every state. Lived overseas more than one time. lived in Japan and Brazil.

We never have to worry if you will be here or not. You are very dependable. Appreciate that you always go above and beyond in your service. You really do pay attention to detail. Our yard has not looked this good with other people we have used. You are always willing to do something extra if we ask you to. Thank you, John!

I called John to help out while I was recovering from a minor back problem. I only used him once and I told him I'd only need him once, maybe twice, and I mention that because it would have been really easy for him to do a sloppy job and be gone. But, wow! This man has a work ethic that is unbelievable. His charge was reasonable and he "detailed" the yard better than I'd do it for myself, and I'm fairly picky. I highly recommend John D's service and if I ever need help again. There's no question who I'd call.
