About Josh Ellis Photography
I’ve been a passionate storyteller since at least Junior High. I have dabbled in a lot of art forms–painting, drawing, graphic design, writing music–but I didn’t find what I was looking for until I tried photography. For me, photography is the perfect blend of capturing beauty and story.
At every session, I constantly capture the stories and personalities of the people involved. In a portrait session, I don’t come with generic poses or locations. You’re way too interesting to settle for that. I like to get to know a little about you so I can help you express who you are through the photos.
I’d love to work with you. I do all sorts of people photography including wedding photography, engagement portraits, senior portraits, and family portraits. I’m also available to capture other kinds of events and celebrations.
Get in contact with me if you’re interested in those or if you have any other cool thing to discuss.
Questions and answers
- What do you wish customers knew about your profession or trade?
Unfortunately, many customers underestimate the actual value that photography offers until they have a print in their hand. This leads to some great "wow" moments, but I like to emphasize to customers that good photography is worth a lot more than they may think.
- What would you recommend customers looking to save money?
Get in touch with me because I'm very reasonable with making accommodations if possible. I do have some low-end packages that will give you great photography even with a slightly tighter budget.
- What information do you recommend to have readily available before looking for a professional in your trade?
When looking for a photographer, it's good to know what kind of photography you're looking for. For the sake of your satisfaction, it's much more important to match your artistic preference than it is to match your budget or convenience preference. This is so important to me that if I discover that a potential client isn't in love with my work, I will suggest other photographers to them that might be better suited for their desires.
- What brands or products do you work with?
I use Canon and Sigma photography equipment. I don't do commercial shoots usually. I like everyday humans the best.
- How did you get started?
I got started when I was still in high school. I loved taking pictures of nature on family vacations. Unfortunately, my family didn't want me to take pictures of them, so it wasn't until a few years later that I discovered my love of people photography through taking photos of friends.
- What are the most frequent questions you get from customers? What are the answers?
Q: How long does processing take?
A: Processing for portrait sessions can take up to 2 weeks. Weddings usually take about 1 month.
Q: Can we do [insert idea] at our shoot?
A: Within reason, of course! It's your session, and your ideas are important to me. There have been some great photos made from suggestions of clients!
- What questions should a customer ask before hiring a professional in your trade?
Before hiring a professional photographer, a customer should make sure they're getting a photographer who is passionate about capturing the person's unique needs. Too many photographers have a formulaic approach where there's no personality that comes through each shoot even though the different people in the pictures have extremely different personalities and should be given different resulting images based on that.
- How many projects do you average in a year?
My business has also been growing quite a bit from year to year, which makes it hard to give a real average.
- What types of jobs are the most common?
I mostly do portrait photography. My second common job is doing weddings, but to be honest, I prefer the portrait sessions because of the time I get to spend with the couple crafting images for them.
- What certifications or professional affiliations do you have?
I'm going to be real honest here: I have no certifications or professional affiliations. Some people will be disappointed at this, but here's why I'm not worried about it: certifications in creative fields ensure nothing about the quality, consistency, or beauty of the artist.
There is no organization or test or group of people that could ever predict whether you would be satisfied by my art. Only your artist can offer that guarantee. This is why I offer a 110% money-back guarantee (yes, 110% -- I would pay you) for any dissatisfaction.
Anyway, rather than waste my time on maintaining certifications, I'd rather be shooting and perfecting my craft.
- What areas of your trade do you specialize in?
I specialize in portrait photography and event photography, especially seniors, couples, and weddings. I also enjoy music photography and any other kind of photography where there is a story to be captured and told.
- What services do you provide your customers after the work has finished?
After the session, I help customers figure out what they need regarding prints and their options for getting prints made. I work with customers to make sure they get what they wanted and are completely satisfied.
- Tell us something customers may not know about you.
I love reading, and it is important to me to keep up with the photography industry. I spend time every day reading blogs, articles, and books about photography to make sure that I am offering my clients the best.
- Tell us about the project or job that you are most proud of (in the last 12 months).
My favorite project in the last few months was a senior portrait session I did with a friend of mine.
