Questions and answers
- What types of jobs are the most common?
Definitely, I do a lot of weddings, but I also love being able to work with a model. I love coming up with fun ideas for the photo shoot or putting together something the model would like for her portfolio. At a wedding, the day has already been laid out. What I like with a one-on-one shoot is that I get to do most of the planning, and I find that part rewarding.
- What brands or products do you work with?
I'm a Canon girl! I always have been and I can't see myself switching. My favorite lens is my 35mm f/1.4 prime. Prime lens are my favorite because I feel even more involved in the picture-taking process. I get to move around more and really create the perfect shot for myself.
- How did you get started?
One day, I decided that I shouldn't have to dislike my job. I thought about what I was passionate about and what I was good at. Sitting in an office did not come up. Photography was my natural answer, and so I started building my business!
- Tell us about the project or job that you are most proud of (in the last 12 months).
This changes constantly. I'm proud of every wedding, and each time I think, "Wow, that was our best wedding!" We will do another wedding or shoot and find that we love it even more. Generally, I'm super proud when I see happy customers excited for their pictures.
- Tell us something customers may not know about you.
I'm a huge nerd. Well, they might get to know that pretty quickly once they meet me. I love most things nerdy, and I love to laugh ... a lot.
- What are the most frequent questions you get from customers? What are the answers?
Usually, they want to know what is included in the packages, and all of this is listed on my Web site, but I don't mind sending out e-mails detailing all this information. Generally, my customers do end up getting more pictures than they expect though.
- What areas of your trade do you specialize in?
I specialize in weddings. It means I get to spend a day at a big beautiful party where everyone is happy and enjoying the day. Then I get to provide the bride and groom with digital memories. I feel it's a huge honor to be a part of such an important day.
- What would you recommend customers looking to save money?
I'd say to get the basic package and not get any add-ons. The basic package offers so much in terms of the amount of pictures and the fact that you own the rights to your photos.
- What questions should a customer ask before hiring a professional in your trade?
I think a customer should first figure out what they really want out of their photography session and then make sure they find a photographer that can offer what they want.
- How many projects do you average in a year?
It really depends. Usually I would say it averages to about a shoot per week. It can be a bit exhausting at times, but in a really good way. I love feeling like I've done a lot of good work and accomplished art that I am proud of.
- What do you wish customers knew about your profession or trade?
Most people think that photographers get to take pictures all day long. If only that were true! The less glamorous side of photography involves a lot of paperwork, site management, marketing, late nights, research, and a possible addiction to camera gear!
- What information do you recommend to have readily available before looking for a professional in your trade?
As mentioned before, a customer should have a good idea of what they are looking for so they can start fleshing it out even more with the photographer. That way, they can bounce relevant ideas back and forth and come up with the right concept.
