• 1. What are those black streaks on my roof?

  The black streaks that you see on your roof are a type of microorganism, specifically known as gloeocapsa magma. In suitable environments, this hardy algae reproduce and release windborne spores, which spread the infestation to other rooftops. Gloeocapsa cells produce a substance that adheres them firmly to surfaces and prevents wind or rain from dislodging established Gloeocapsa colonies.

  While some shingle manufactures have concluded that the infestation of the algae is a result of a residential housing boom, the truth is that the introduction of fiberglass asphalt shingles containing ground up limestone filler is what is causing the epidemic.

  While the algae itself is not damaging your roof, the black streaks will allow more heat and moisture to absorb into the roofing material causing the roof to break down faster. It is also aesthetically unappealing.

  2. What is your process?

  Roof Rejuvenator uses a compound that has a high concentration of the active ingredient Sodium Percarbonate, which is an earth friendly, biodegradable chemical that is safe for vegetation, pets, and people. The process starts by applying the compound to kill the algae on contact. The remaining stains are rinsed away using a low pressure/high velocity rinsing tool connected to a pressure washer.

  3. Will Pressure Washing damage my shingles?

  This is the most highly debated topic of roof cleaning. The claim that pressure washing will damage shingles comes from a misunderstanding how pressure washers work and no knowledge of fluid mechanics. If used by a properly trained and experienced individual, pressure washing will not damage your roof or cause abnormal granule loss. But, a pressure washer in the wrong hands can damage your roof.

  4. Will Pressure Washing void my shingle warrantee?

  I have looked at warrantees of major shingle manufacturers including, Owens Corning, Certain Teed, and GAF, and there is no mention of coverage limitations regarding the use of pressure washers. In fact, all specifically stated that they will not cover damages due to algae, fungus, mold, mildew, or lichen unless you have purchased algae resistant or treated shingles. Not having your roof cleaned could void your warrantee.

  If you are concerned, CHECK YOUR WARRANTEE FIRST before hiring any contractor to clean your roof.

  5. If I have my roof cleaned, will the black streaks come back?

  Eventually, the algae will come back. But, recently I followed up on customers from 2007 and 2008 and 90% of them said their roof still looked great. So, it would likely be at least 3-4 years before the black streaks become noticeable again. I guarantee my work for a period of one year… if the black streaks come back within one year, I will return to re-clean your roof. NO EXTRA CHARGE!!

  6. Do you have a guarantee?

  The standard cost includes a one year guarantee. Other local contractors will guarantee their work for 2, even 3 years. But it’s kind of buying an expensive extended warrantee since some charge 2 or 3 times what I charge.
