About Southern Home

We are a full-service painting company, located in Richmond, VA. Southern Home has been in business since 1987. We are experts in the preparation of all surfaces for coatings of paint that last longer than traditional paint companies. We use the highest quality paints, products like Benjamin Moore, Shwerwin Williams, Porter Paints and Duron.

All paint products are expertly applied- from complex oil paints to acrylic and latex. We are trustworthy and honest workers with a penchant for details. Most of the crew is college educated, myself, the owner of the company, Joseph Sowell, with a Dean's list B.S. degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Your house is cared for with kit gloves. Tarps are placed about and where necessary, belongings are covered or moved.

We've been painting for a long time and quality is of the highest level. We can prove to you that quality, professionalism, and knowledge go a long way and provide you with comfort in what can be a process you are not generally accustomed to. We respect you and your home as if it were our own.

Questions and answers

  • What information do you recommend to have readily available before looking for a professional in your trade?
  • It would be my recommendation that a customer know what product is on her walls to begin with. Every paint has its own specific nuance. It helps me, the painter, what will be best to use on said surfaces. The customer should know what type of sheen they desire.

  • Tell us about the project or job that you are most proud of (in the last 12 months).
  • The job that I am most proud of is a job in which I painted trim on the exterior of a one hundred year home in Windsor Farms in Richmond, VA. The work had to look perfect, and the results were excellent. Southern Home has been in the neighborhood working ever since.

  • What are the most frequent questions you get from customers? What are the answers?
  • One of the most frequent questions I hear is in regards to color selection and choosing a color that won't be too dark. Or, choice of color combinations.

  • What types of jobs are the most common?
  • Interior painting of all homes. Some exterior painting is done, but typically as the season becomes warm again.

  • What areas of your trade do you specialize in?
  • Painting with all paint products- oil, acrylic, latex. Specialists in the application of all finishes. Interior painting is our specialty. Faux finishes are available. Wallpaper is available.

  • What do you wish customers knew about your profession or trade?
  • Customers need to know that paint is made in different ways. Higher quality paints cost a bit more, but they are more durable. They are washable and will not wear away when washed. Different finishes give the customer different results.

  • What brands or products do you work with?
  • My favorite brand to use is Benjamin Moore. It is an excellent paint, http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/for-contractors/product-catalog#advs=0&tab=0. (See for yourself).

My second favorite paint would be Duron, which was bought out by Sherwin Williams. Porter Paints would be my only other favorite.

  • What would you recommend customers looking to save money?
  • If a customer wants to save some money, I suggest that they take advantage of some of the great offers I have from time to time. I sometimes purchase larger amounts of product to save money; when I do, I pass those savings to my customers. The customer never pays extra for product, in fact they get the product for the reduced price that I get the product for.

  • How many projects do you average in a year?
  • We paint nearly one hundred homes per year. Most homes are large, some are older and require more finesse, but my trademark is quality and not quantity.

  • What questions should a customer ask before hiring a professional in your trade?
  • Customers need to ask which paints will be most durable. They need to use good products and they will get great results from those products.

  • How did you get started?
  • I started painting for a real estate company in Richmond, VA in 1986: Neville C. Johnson Realtors. Working for that company, Southern Home painted nearly a hundred apartments over a two year period. Property was polished to perfection and rental units went quick because of the fine job my company did. Work picked up from there and we have never stopped since.

  • What services do you provide your customers after the work has finished?
  • After the work is finished, the customer is assured that warrantied products will be supported by Southern Home by various companies that offer warrantied sealants.

  • What certifications or professional affiliations do you have?
  • I am a certified paint contractor by Benjamin Moore, Duron and Sherwin Williams. I have attended numerous training classes within those companies. I know about every paint and am educated in the usage of those products.

  • Tell us something customers may not know about you.
  • I have a B.S. degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. There, for one year, I went through vigorous art programs and learned a lot about colors and color combinations. That knowledge helped me to move into the work that I now am in. I am able to suggest various color combinations that the customer may not have thought about.
