Questions and Answers

  • What do you recommend to know before hiring you?
Do you have an outdoor water source and outdoor electrical source? (Too many people want to install a garden but without a water and / or electrical source, irrigation isn't possible. Often folks aren't able to hand-water on a daily basis and realize too late that they're in over their heads. So knowing whether you can add irrigation to keep your garden alive is key.)
  • What is important to know about your profession?
Gardening takes years of hands-on experience, as well as lots of reading, coursework and continuing education. For those who love it, it's not a pesky chore, it's a field that combines artistic vision, creativity, science and hard work.
  • What are you most proud of?
We're in the midst of completely rehabilitating a back yard in Long Island City. It's a very old home and the garden was originally planted by the client's father, who tended it with great love for almost 50 years. After he passed away, the garden fell into terrible disrepair and requires a near complete replanting. We are working to recreate the garden so that it encompasses both the plants and framework that the father had loved so much and also becomes a more functional, vibrant space for the family to enjoy. We have a great plan in place and can't wait for the finished product. I think it's going to really knock the socks off of our clients!
  • How did you get started?
Served as manager of local garden center, employed as lead gardener for several local landscaping and greenroof companies, decided to run my own gardening company!
  • Do you offer any service after finishing the work?
Follow up notes, check-ins and return visits as desired.
  • How can we save money hiring you?
Incorporate plants that work best in your particular light, water, hardiness zone and environment, so that you're getting the right plant for the right space, which will last for years to come.
  • What questions should a customer ask before hiring you?
  • What experience do you have?
  • Are you rated well on Angie's List?
  • Are you fully insured?
  • What are your rates and policies?
  • How do you bill?
  • What is your availabilty?
  • What types of jobs are the most common?
Garden designs and installations, garden cleanups and maintenance, indoor plant installations and care, irrigation, lighting, hardscaping, holiday decorating, pest checks and treatments.
  • How many projects do you average in a year?
I have about 60 loyal clients and am adding additional clients all the time. (Some clients have me at their homes for weekly maintenance, some I see once a month, some I see seasonally and some only when they need a little extra help with their plants.)
