We have trusted relationships with our vendors and design professionals. We don't typically suggest products from big box stores because they are not of the same quality standard that we feel our projects and homeowners deserve. We also tend to shy away from homeowner supplied materials because there is often not a cost savings and more often than not it brings unnecessary complexity to what is already a complex process. The guidance that our professionals bring to the process ensures better product selection and that the right parts are available when needed.
Questions and Answers
What is important to know about your profession?
There is a huge spectrum of contractors out there. Some are focused on profit at the expense of quality and/or their customers. Take the time to find the right fit for you and your project. At the same time, maintain realistic expectations. If you have never done a remodel before you may not know what to expect, so make sure you communicate with your contractor and have a clear understanding of what great service looks like vs. what is typical in the industry.
What types of jobs are the most common?
- Whole Home Remodels (interior and/or exterior)
- Kitchen Remodels
- Bathroom Remodels
- Custom Home Builds
What do you recommend to know before hiring you?
The following are helpful to provide:
- Written summary of the scope of work (as detailed as possible so that any contractors you interview are on the same page as to what the job entails.)
- Copy of your current survey (if doing an addition or new build)
- Your desired investment range for your project (e.g. your budget)
- Any timeline or other considerations that may impact the project
How can we save money hiring you?
Wait. Completing a remodel or custom home build is your opportunity to create a vision that is uniquely yours and that meets your needs in nearly every way. If cost is the driving factor in your decision making, you will be at high risk for either hiring the wrong contractor, sacrificing that vision and/or having an overall negative experience. By waiting, you can take the time you need to save up additional funds, sell items you don't use, cut back on unnecessary expenses, or even ask for a raise before you embark on creating your dream living spaces.
What kind of questions do customers ask you?
How much is it going to cost to do xyz project?
Randy grew up as the son of a prominent home builder in Tyler, Texas. At his dad's side, he quickly acquired skills and knowledge in several trade areas and developed into a skilled craftsman in his own right. He then moved to the San Francisco Bay area in California where he took his career to the next level by working on many multimillion dollar remodels and new build projects. He came back to Austin to visit family when he met his "other half" Cara. She convinced him to say and together they have continued to build RRS Design Build on a strong foundation not so far from where it all started.
How many projects do you average in a year?
Having the right fit between our company and our client's needs is critical to the project's success. We evaluate potential projects to determine if there is a win/win there for all involved. We tend to take on projects with a medium to large scope of work vs. single service (e.g. replacing existing countertops). This allows us to provide a higher level of service for fewer clients vs. trying to meet the more basic needs of many.
What we may not know about you?
We feel very blessed in our personal lives and in business. We feel it is our duty to give back to those truly in need.
Do you offer any service after finishing the work?
We warranty our workmanship and follow up with our clients at specific time points after the job has completed to ensure that they are satisfied and that any possible concerns are promptly evaluated and resolved. We believe in building relationships as much as we are invested in building; therefore our client's satisfaction is very important to us.
What questions should a customer ask before hiring you?
Texas does not license general contractors, therefore it is important to understand the background, skills and experience of anyone you hire. Our General Contractor, Randy was licensed in California, a state known for its extremely high standards for construction and building codes. He brings that experience and attention to detail to his work in the Austin metro area. RRS Design Build is also an award winning firm and is a member of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), Home Builders Association (HBA), National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), and Texas Builders Association.
What are you most proud of?
Our client had beautiful Turkish Travertine floors with onyx veining that was running throughout her home. She wanted to do a complete remodel of her kitchen. The final design plans completely reconfigured the space and was going to disturb a significant portion of the existing flooring. Before beginning the project, the flooring was identified but we discovered that it had been discontinued a couple years prior and that the mine in Turkey had been closed for religious reasons. Working with our vendors we tracked down a small number of tiles in Turkey that were tied up in customs for weeks. The existing tiles were surgically removed during demo and re-laid to feather in the new tiles with the old creating a near seamless look. The overall project was stunning and looked like it had always been there.
