Questions and Answers
What questions should a customer ask before hiring you?
How long have you been in business? What types of signs do you normally make? Are your signs made in the USA? Can you show me some of your work?
What kind of questions do customers ask you?
The most frequent thing that almost all my customers say is that I want a sign that really looks great but I don't want to spend a lot of money on it. That being said we all want that and I do my best to get them a great sign at a great price. Here is the good news, I deal with business people and they know that everyone has to make a living and if I can't make a living I won't be there for the next sign when they expand or be there when they need service.
Do you offer any service after finishing the work?
We make new and provide maintenance on all electrical signs except neon. We make all types of wood signs and refurbish wood signs and we guarantee the workmanship of our signs for up to 2 years.
How many projects do you average in a year?
Right now we do approximately 100-150 projects in a year. Our main focuses are on Wood Signs and Electric signs. We are proud to be one of the only sign companies in NJ to still offer real wood in our carved signs. Over the almost 20 years in business we have become quite knowledgeable about electric signs. We stopped using magnetic ballasts as soon as the electronic ballast became available saving the customer an average of 40% in electric. Also we were one of the first companies that switched to LEDs saving the customer an average of 90% of the energy used to run the signs. Additionally the cost of repairing neon and service contracts are essentially gone. I am not sure what the biggest advantage for going green in the sign business is, knowing you are helping the environment, saving money or time.
While looking back at all the work I had done over the years, I realized that I had always been involved in the advertising and anything to do with making signs for the company. So I learned to carve signs by hand and soon started making all types of signs and opened a store.
How can we save money hiring you?
Saving money is easy with Signs for Today. First of all we are extremely competitively priced on all our signs. Secondly we look for ways to save our customers money on every job. For example, we don't use Neon in any of our signs anymore. It costs too much to run, too much to repair and there is no need for a service contract with LEDs. We offer a 2 year warranty on neon to LED replacement. Don't forget no neon no fire. That is right with neon it is not will i have a fire it is when so always go with high quality LEDs from Signs for Today for consistent cost savings.
What are you most proud of?
We have 2 projects that I am very proud of. Recently we refurbished / restored a sandblasted sign for Manchester Village. We totally changed the look of the sign, doubled it's life and saved the customer approximately $5000.00. This is a win, win, for Signs for Today, the customer and the environment. After the storm we had the opportunity to rebuild an existing light box that had been damaged. Instead of using standard fluorescent bulbs we installed LEDs and a 20' wide seamless face. The LEDs will last approx 40 years and the seamless face will not show light leaks taking away from the appearance of the sign. I think this is a good use of technology and common sense to help the environment and our customer.
What is important to know about your profession?
Sign makers are not all the same. We don't offer the same services, materials or quality of installation. I have been in the sign business since 1994 so I have seen a lot of bad installations, cheap products and unhappy customers as a result of sloppy short term thinking on my competitors part.We take signs seriously. Your sign will guide your customers to your business and you want a sign designed by a professional. We make all types of commercial signs and we want the type of sign that will fit the building, business and professional level that you as a business owner deserves.
What do you recommend to know before hiring you?
The best thing to do is to look at signs as you are driving or walking around. Try to think what type of sign that might work for your business. Ok this might sound weird but call a couple of sign companies and see if you can find out what type of company they are. Do they make the signs or are they just a broker? Do they install? Do they get permits? Are they limited to just a few types of signs and do they offer a warranty? For example, if you want channel letters for your business, did you know there are many different types of Channel letters available. Front lit, back lit, front and back lit, edge lit, neon, LED and multicolored LED. That is just to name a few. Do you want them direct mounted or on a raceway and what are the advantages of both? You want some one who knows the differences of all the signs and can explain it to you and provide any of them at a good price and provide the service you need.
What types of jobs are the most common?
Our most common jobs seem to vary from time to time. Seems like we get a run on wood signs and then on electric signs. September is a big month for Banners here at Signs for Today. In wood we tend to do quite a few MDO signs which stands for Medium Density Overlaid Plywood. I simply call it a sign painters plywood. The signs typically last about 5-7 years and can be cut into various shapes. We make our own sandblasted signs, we used to make them from redwood but it is no longer available so we now make them from HDU which is a High Density Urethane Foam. We have several types of finishes. My personal favorite is the tradition carved sign with 23K gold, we make them from wood or from HDU that is strengthened by MDO.
What we may not know about you?
First of all I would like all my customers to know that if you ask us to design a sign, it is designed and priced specifically for you. We take the time to get to know what type of business you are in, what type of sign that works well in that type of business. We usually know what the local ordinances are or we find out. We try very hard to fit your budget, take your design ideas and get you the best value sign we possibly can. Your sign is your sign and it is important to me that you are happy with it, the sign makes you money and it last as long as possible. My reputation and integrity are the most the most important things to me.
