Experts in the industry have clients tell them on a daily basis the aspects of windows and doors they consider the most important. Here, 100% of them reveal that durability and longevity are top of the priority list, being either “important” or “very important” for homeowners. “Durability trumps lowest price. After decades in this business, we've noticed a real shift,” confirms Phil Adkins, the President of Adkins & Sons Windows. “Homeowners are asking better questions. Instead of "What's your cheapest option?" we're hearing "What will last longest?" and "What's covered under warranty?”
Both windows and doors make up a huge part of the overall look, and 91% of experts agree that aesthetics (design, style) is “very important” or “important” to homeowners. The next highest priorities when choosing new windows and doors are thermal performance (U-factor / R-value), and warranty and good after-sales service, with 87% and 92% of pros citing them as “very important” or “important”, respectively.
“Homeowners start the project with a focus on price and appearance. As the project unfolds and as U-factor and installation durability and quality are revealed and explained, their choices change dramatically,” says Douglas Conner, the Owner of Universal Windows Direct of New Jersey. “In the upcoming years, the most successful companies will be the ones who combine high-performing products with honest streaming, robust performing installation, and warranties that homeowners understand.”
Maintenance requirements also remain a significant concern, rated as “very important” or “important” by 78% of experts, while customization options are cited by 73%. “The number of customization options available to consumers continues to expand so that homeowners can select the product that best fits their unique taste and needs,” confirms Branden Wells, the CEO and Founder of Truecraft Construction.
Security features and extreme weather protection remain a significant concern, both rated as “very important” or “important” by 70% of experts.
Sustainability, smart home integration, and modular systems are not that important for homeowners in their decision-making process, according to our experts. “Architects want owners to match our desire for saving energy, but most want something nice looking and secure, while being affordable,” shares Lee Calisti, the Principal at lee CALISTI architecture+design.
Are Brands Important to Buyers?
The biggest issue I run into is overconfidence in branding. Just because a window carries a high-end name does not mean it is going to last, seal tight, or install clean.

Not important | Somewhat important | Important | Very important |
0 | 17% | 29% | 54% |
When it comes to making a final decision, a manufacturer's name carries significant weight. According to our survey, 54% of experts say that brand reputation is "very important" to buyers, while another 29% label it as "important." Only 17% of pros believe customers view brands as only “somewhat important”, suggesting that homeowners are looking for established trust and proven track records when investing in their home's envelope.

Understanding how local weather patterns, temperature swings, and seasonal changes impact window and door performance isn't something you learn from a corporate training video.”

Wood species such as rift-cut white oak, which is known for its straight grain and light coloring, provide a pop of visual interest without overwhelming the space.”
2026 Outlook: Balancing Modern Efficiency with Timeless Design
“The bottom line? Homeowners in 2026 are more informed, more selective, and more focused on long-term value,” says Adkins. The 2026 outlook for windows and doors highlights a homeowner who is more educated and demanding than ever before. The data shows a market that refuses to choose between beauty and brawn; instead, it demands the combination of minimalistic and traditional designs that offer maximum durability and security. As we move through the year, the successful home renovation will be defined by its ability to blend high-tech materials like fiberglass with the timeless, welcoming appeal of wood-grain finishes and expansive glass.
Bostwick adds, “The future of this industry belongs to companies that can merge clean sightlines with resilient façades, and that’s where true innovation is happening. The intersection of design and performance is what will define the next decade of windows and doors.”
