How much does it cost to implement Feng Shui design?

Feng Shui is a Chinese design philosophy that suggests the objects in your home, and their placement, can have an effect on your physical health, mental well-being, and success in life. It claims that there is an “energy flow” in your home, created largely by its interior design. Your home’s energy flow interacts with your personal energy flow. The goal of Feng Shui is to achieve a design that frees the energy and helps you live better. Feng Shui design prices are highly variable, differing considerably based on individual professionals, home sizes, and your design needs. This guide assesses the average cost of implementing Feng Shui design in your home.

Having Feng Shui design in your home has practical benefits: its principles are conducive to building clutter-free, unobstructed layouts and making your home feel like a more peaceful place. Working with a Feng Shui designer or consultant can help you achieve an attractive design that makes your interior feel more welcoming and accommodating of your usual household activities. Hiring a professional can also prevent you from making Feng Shui design mistakes.

Disadvantages include some impractical suggestions that may be made by the expert, such as full home remodels. Expert Feng Shui services can be relatively expensive, and it can be hard to determine who is a real Feng Shui expert and who is simply an interior designer that dabbles in Feng Shui. Always ask a Feng Shui consultant about their training and what discipline (“school”) they belong to before hiring. The International Feng Shui Guild provides a list of trusted Feng Shui training schools, which includes the International Feng Shui School, the Academy of Exquisite Living, and the East Coast Institute of Feng Shui.

Also ask for references. It’s recommended that you get in touch with a consultant/designer’s past clients before hiring. Ask them if they are satisfied with the results, if they’d use the same consultant again in the future, and if the consultant conducted themselves professionally.

Buying new items

You needn’t buy anything new to adopt some Feng Shui design principles in your home. However, depending on the layout of your space, you may be advised to purchase items like mirrors, curtains, or differently shaped furniture to maximize the Feng Shui.

Labor

You can hire a Fenh Shui designer or a consultant. Feng Shui designers will typically participate in changing your home’s interior to be more Feng Shui. This service includes giving a consultation, selecting and purchasing new decor, rearranging furniture, managing outside contractors, and adding new design elements. Designers can charge in a variety of ways:

  • Cost plus: Cost of consultation, materials, and contractors, plus a 20% markup.
  • Flat fee: You and the designer will agree upon a single fee that covers everything. Fees vary depending on what room(s) are being designed and their size, but the average cost for a standard bedroom is $6,000.
  • Hourly rate: Typical designer rates are $50-$200 per hour.
  • Square footage: A price per square foot is set (average is $0.50-$1.20).

Consultants do not usually take a hands-on approach, instead offering their advice and guidance through consultations. It is usually then up to you to apply their suggested solutions. Consultations generally involve a Feng Shui professional coming to your home and walking through it. As they go through the rooms, they’ll assess the current “flow of energy”, identify problem spots, and envision changes that can be made to maximize each area’s Feng Shui. Many experts will also teach traditional Feng Shui rituals during a consultation, as well as practical organization skills. Afterward, most professionals will provide you with a written report of all of the problems in your current design and the changes needed. Consultations typically cost $500 and last 2 hours, but high-end Feng Shui professionals can charge as much as $1,400 or more. Many designers and consultants offer a consultation rate of $250 per hour. Experts often have higher consultation fees for particularly large homes. A large stand-alone house may cost as much as $3600

Some experts will offer to do a follow-up visit after your design has been altered to be more Feng Shui. This can sometimes be included in the price of your original consultation, but usually costs an extra $250.

It’s common for Feng Shui professionals to also offer phone consultations. They will typically require you to mail them photos of your home’s interior, as well as a drawn floor plan. Many will ask you to fill out a worksheet or questionnaire as well. Phone consultations can cost around:

  • $100-$150 for a 15-minute, single-question call
  • $150-$250 for a quick 30-minute consultation
  • $200-$400 for a full 1 hour consultation

Some high-end consultants can charge $700 or more for 1 hour phone consultations.

Many designers and consultants charge by square footage for the entire project. The average price per sq. ft. is $0.50-$1.20.

Yin and yang

Yin describes private places in your home, such as bedrooms, while Yang describes public spaces, like the kitchen or living room. Feng Shui is intended to honor the nature of these spaces and design them accordingly. Yin rooms should have slightly more feminine and understated styling. More masculine, dramatic styling should only be done in Yang rooms. Bold, saturated colors are best for public rooms, while subdued colors are better for private rooms.

Basics

  • Bed: The head of your bed should be against the wall farthest from the door, but not directly across from it. Directly facing the door is known as the “coffin position” and is very undesirable. Your bed should always at least have a view of the door though.
  • Couch: A couch should be against a wall and have a clear view of the entry door. All living room seating should be arranged to make conversation easy and natural.
  • Desk: Your desk should have a commanding position directly opposite a door.
  • Light: Ambient light is the most Feng Shui. Harsh lights that focus illumination in one spot is undesirable. All rooms should be bright and filled with light. Dark corners and spaces are bad.
  • Electronics: Electric appliances and wires should be minimized in Yin rooms like bedrooms.

Enhancement and improvement costs

Annual feng shui

Your Feng Shui designer or consultant may offer annual visits, during which you can have your home’s design updated to stay in line with your current lifestyle and goals. These cost $250-$450 on average. Regular customers are often offered discounts as high as 50% for annual consultations.

Color consultation

A Feng Shui designer or consultant can advise you which colors would be best to paint your walls and decorate with. Color consultations start at $60 per room.

Color choices are important for achieving a high level of Feng Shui. According to the principles of Feng Shui, each color is associated with one of the 5 natural elements: fire, earth, metal, water, and wood. The colors you choose and where you place them are believed to have a big influence on your home’s energy and your personal well being.

For example, if you want to improve your health, it’s recommended that you choose items and colors that fit in the wood element category and place them on the eastern side of your home and its rooms. This means wooden furniture and decor, or even plants, in hues of green or teal.

If you want to bring more energy and passion to your life, use items and colors that fit in the fire element category. These include candles and fireplaces, and colors like red, pink, and orange. Only place fire colors in your home’s yang rooms.

Construction feng shui

If you are planning on building a house, Feng Shui experts can help you design a layout that creates a high “flow of energy” and maximizes your well-being. Pricing for construction Feng Shui varies greatly, and is largely dependent on the size and complexity of your project.

Real estate feng shui

Many experts will offer their consultation services to homebuyers. If you are looking at homes for sale, an expert can accompany you and advise you on the Feng Shui of each prospective home. This service typically costs $190-$390 per trip. Some will offer to examine other homes during the same trip for an additional $50 each, as long as they are within a short drive of the first house.

Additional considerations and costs

Quotes

It’s advised that you should get more than one quote from Feng Shui designers and consultants. Individual experts may recommend different things; having multiple quotes will help you decide what’s best for your practical abilities and budget.

DIY

You can DIY your own Feng Shui design by learning some of the principles and rearranging your interior to better align with them. This will save you the cost of hiring a consultant or designer, leaving you with only the cost of any new decor or furnishings you choose to buy.
