Current kitchen trends have homeowners focusing on updating their old, outdated, and non-functioning kitchens to make them more usable and a better fit for their needs. White continues to dominate the color field, while durability and maintenance become the most important factors in choosing a countertop. Like all kitchen remodeling trends, there’s an equal blend of form and function, with interest in things like energy efficient appliances, as well as new styles in cabinets and kitchen islands

Remodels for Outdated and Non-Functional Designs

When the time comes to remodel, most homeowners report wanting to do so because their design is outdated. This is followed by kitchens that aren’t functional for their needs. Fewer homeowners report wanting to remodel for resale purposes or because the space is too small.

White is far and away the most popular color for kitchens, capturing 43% of the vote. This is followed distantly by neutrals at 27% of the vote. Cool colors take 22%, while bold and dark colors fall out of favor for today’s kitchen.

While there are many different layouts available for kitchens, homeowners overwhelmingly want a layout that includes an island. Island layouts are preferred 92% of the time, with peninsula layouts taking a distant second at 30% of the time.
