Current kitchen trends have homeowners focusing on updating their old, outdated, and non-functioning kitchens to make them more usable and a better fit for their needs. White continues to dominate the color field, while durability and maintenance become the most important factors in choosing a countertop. Like all kitchen remodeling trends, there's an equal blend of form and function, with interest in things like energy efficient appliances, as well as new styles in cabinets and kitchen islands

Remodels for Outdated and Non-Functional Designs

When the time comes to remodel, most homeowners report wanting to do so because their design is outdated. This is followed by kitchens that aren't functional for their needs. Fewer homeowners report wanting to remodel for resale purposes or because the space is too small.

White is far and away the most popular color for kitchens, capturing 43% of the vote. This is followed distantly by neutrals at 27% of the vote. Cool colors take 22%, while bold and dark colors fall out of favor for today's kitchen.

Kitchens with Island Layouts Rank Highest

While there are many different layouts available for kitchens, homeowners overwhelmingly want a layout that includes an island. Island layouts are preferred 92% of the time, with peninsula layouts taking a distant second at 30% of the time.

With so many choices for countertop material, most homeowners base their selection on two qualities - how durable the material is, and how easy it is to maintain. Style, color, and other attributes lag behind.

Smart appliances are becoming more common in kitchen remodels. According to experts, most homeowners want to see smart lighting ahead of other smart appliances in the kitchen. Lighting ranks at 66% of the vote, followed distantly by coffee makers at 19% of the vote.

Trends for kitchen remodeling once focused more on style and appearance. Today, those trends have shifted to focus more on function and making the most of the space. Make sure that you're paying attention to the trends as they unfold in order to ensure that your next design makes the most of the space. Whether you're an industry professional or a homeowner, understanding the latest kitchen remodeling trends can help you create a better design in the future.
